The staff of Advanced Scribes will be working together to create a
Create Your Own Adventure Story. Here, a story will progress and
members will have the ability to choose what happens next through
a series of scenarios with numerous choices in them. Members can
message what they vote for and in the next issue, the story will pro
gress, based on those votes.

Featured Writing is meant to showcase the works of members that
have personal work posted up in the Share Your Writing forum, to
draw attention to their work. If chosen to be featured in the mag-
azine, the writer will be messaged for a blurb to summarize their
story and asked to provide a snippet they think will draw readers in
and intrigue them to continue reading their work. Members are we-
lcome to send in nominations of stories they think should be featur-
ed. Anything from the Share Your Writing forum is fair game.

Members can send in Anonymous Compliments about other members.
While there is the Warm Fuzzies thread, this segment is meant for
small paragraphs or less to brighten someone's day. Compliments will
be kept anonymous and the receiving end will receive a message to
alert them to the fact that they have a message posted in the maga-
zine from them. This is to promote positivity throughout the site and
we hope our members enjoy this segment.

Lastly, the Anonymous Critique section. Members who seek critique
for their work can submit their work to us. Then, other members ha-
ve the option of reading and providing comment and feedback. Mem-
bers may do so by posting directly on the thread, or by messaging an
anonymous critique to be posted for them by forlorn.

Make sure to check our Facebook Page frequently and follow it!

Hello Scribes! Welcome Advanced Scribe's magazine, The AS Afflatus.
This magazine will serve numerous functions and we hope to provide
content for everyone. Here, members will receive updates on current
happenings of site activity and any potential upcoming changes. Along
with this, we hope for the Afflatus to be a resource for prompts,
character development, advice of any kind, and many other functions.

There will be several segments in the Afflatus and future segments
can be added. If you ever have any comments or suggestions for
future issues that you think would be a cool addition to the Afflatus,
then please do PM me and title the PM with 'The AS Afflatus.'

One of the segments here in the Afflatus will be Writing Tips. This
segment will serve to provide any tips that can better our community's
writing and even have tips on things writers may find themselves resear-
ching. Members of the community are always welcome to message any
tips they think may be useful to share with others, or even ask for cert-
ain things to be found.

Our next segment is Dear __(namehere)__. Similar to newspapers,
this will serve as an advice column. Members who send in things they
want advice on may be kept anonymous, if they choose. Once the
next issue is posted, a response will be given out by (namehere).
Please note, however, that the issues will be posted once a month.
We will send responses back to PMs individually, but will post the
question and answer in the coming issue. We hope this helps others
who may be going through similar situations and can relate.

Character Interview will be a handful of questions, around twenty,
that one can use for developing a character they have created or are
in the process of creating. Each issue will feature a set of different
questions, though questions may sometimes be repeated. Members are
welcome to send in their answers to the questions (or some of the qu-
estions) to be featured in the magazine's next issue.

In the Prompts segment, there will be two or three prompts, snippets,
dialogues, or even songs posted. Members are welcome to use these
prompts to inspire their own plots or use them in role-plays. Along
with this, members are encouraged to write a small response to the
prompt and send it in to be featured in the next issue. Submissions
should be no longer than three hundred (300) words.

commander shepard
Ayyye! So nice to be able to settle down in here and get to know you all.
I've never really been asked to talk about myself before, sooo this may or
may not be a horrible blurb and I apologize in advance. I'm Commander
Shepard, but most people just call me Shep, or Commander. I'm a 24 year
old female living in the sub-zero temperatures of Montana, and my main
hobby is shivering to keep warm. Hah, just kidding, but it really is friggin
cold here. I'm a very friendly person, though I've been desensitized and
can be classified as unsympathetic due to spending six years in the
Montana Army National Guard. That doesn't mean that I'm some
horrid person or anything, just how I operate. I'm very easy to get
along with, and encourage you to send me a message if you ever
want to chat. I won't bite, snap, or grumble, and that's a promise.
I currently work at my local GameStop as a the Assistant Store
Manager, which is pretty high up in the stores 'chain of command',
and I intend on getting a few years of manager experience under
my belt before potentially moving on to something less.. retail
orientated. Don't get me wrong, I love the job, but the customers
are SO demanding, and it's very stressful at times. That being said,
it's obvious that I'm a HUGE nerd when it comes to video games,
but I'm more into the first person shooters, or RPG based games.
One of my most anticipated games of the year has to be the new
Mass Effect: Andromeda that's coming out on the 21st of March.
I will admit that I've poured over a grand into this game already,
and its not even out yet. I may, or may not, have an obsession with
this game, and if you know anything about Mass Effect please hit me
up with a message! I love to geek out over it, hence my username ;n;.
I also have both an Xbox one and a Playstation 4. If you have either
console, and want to link up sometime feel free to swing me a message
and ask for my tags! (: Once I move on to bigger and better things, I fully
intend on using my G.I. Bill from being in the Military to go to college. I
intend on taking criminal justice courses to help boost my chances at
becoming a police officer one day. I have a long way to go before I can
even look into becoming an officer, but it's always been a dream of mine
to patrol the streets and take care of my country from within it; hence
why I joined the Guard for my state. To even begin the process I'll have
to begin working out again, get my knees surgically replaced so that I can
run without being in excruciating pain, and last but not least; I'll have to
quit smoking so that I can breath better. I mean really, I get winded just
going up the stairs anymore, damn nicotine. I'll cut us off here in this final
paragraph, since I don't want to bore you to death with my life story. I'm
friendly, but I'm also shy when it comes to meeting new people. I'll be very
closed off once I first begin to speak with you, but once I get comfortable
the crazy, and fun, side of me will erupt from my fingers and over the
keyboard and just.. yeah. Anyways, It's lovely to be here, and start to
meet up with people I've not spoken to before and make new friends. If
you ever have any questions, or concerns, please feel free to swing me
a message (:
shadowfurykatrina
Hello!
I'm Shadowfurykatrina, one of the new Global Mods here on AS! I
commonly go by Shasha, Sasha or Fury! Feel free to call me any of
those! I'm a high school senior graduating in late May, planning to
major in Multimedia Design so become a character, world and/or
story designer. I speak both English and Spanish fluently as well as
write in both languages so if you need any help with either
languages, hmu~ I've been here on AS since 2013, I joined
directly from CS where I used to RP. AS has definitely
helped me in improving my writing and I'm so glad that
I found such an open and advanced site~ I also enjoy
drawing, I tend to stick to digital art. I also play the
violin and I'm self teaching myself the piano so
hopefully I'll be able to play the piano at the speed
I would like. I also have a dog named Coco, he has a
crooked tail, he's pretty cool There isn't much to me tbh,
I tried making myself seem cool but honESTLY i'm not cool
at all, I'm sorry ;n; I swear I'm super easy to talk to so please,
do talk to me whenever you'd like! I'm super laid back and
open to random chats from anyone~ especially if they need
some help~! I hope to see you around~
terminal
The name is Terminal and being sick all the time is my best talent.
You can call me Torë, though. I'm a loser living on the East side of t-
he United States, trying to pay my bills just like any other chump. I
am absolutely obsessed with space and would absolutely love to visit
NASA headquarters someday. I am actually a published author - so I
guess being sick isn't my only talent. Most of the time you can track
me down at my desk, hunkered with my pandora and a word docum-
ent mocking me with that blinky cursor. I've never been the best at l
etting go and I tend to stick to a path. Being a nervous person, I like
things to be stable; however, if you can convince me to take a hike
on a different road, I never regret it. I guess I'm just a timid little d-
ear. Fun fact, I'm terrified of storms and will literally run away from
a goose if I see one. Got bit by one of those things in the butt once.
It wasn't fun, 0/10 would not recommend. I've gone to college cours-
es, but don't have a degree in anything. I mostly focused on my care-
er and built my way up to management positions. On the weekends I
sometimes find time for my best friend here and we go off on an ad-
venture in my car (cleverly named Stark, because it is a Dodge Aven-
ger) and we sing. As a choir kid for all of my school career, from fir-
st grade all the way to senior year, I've developed my voice. I would
love to make a profession out of one of my favorite hobbies but put
me on a stage in front of people and I get knee-locked. All in all, I
am a very open minded person and rather enjoy meeting new friends.
I am so very happy to be part of the Advanced Scribes team and look
forward to many adventures with you all.

huntress
Since I'm only eighteen in July, I am the youngest of the staff team
here at Advanced Scribes, but I've been an active member of the c-
ommunity here since August 2013, having migrated away from Chi-
cken Smoothie. I'm a scientist at heart, but creativity has been wo-
ven into me since my childhood, hence my hobbies of writing and
on occasion, acrylic canvas painting. Even a couple of my friends
at college are aspiring writers and have written their own stories, I
used to do some editing for them. It might make me somewhat cli-
che but I am quite partial to a good old romance, usually with some
tension of the whole enemies to lovers genre - its given me all sorts
of ideas and writing plans from medieval assassins, gang leaders an-
d lost innocents, the devil and an angelic girl. I have met a couple
of authors and enjoy the works of M.K Eidem and R.J Lewis, I also
follow along with the Shadow Hunter series, both the books and the
Netflix series. I was born in often rainy, little but proud England, a
nd have lived in the same town my whole life, though this year I a-
m finishing A-levels in Biology, Chemistry and Classical Civilisation,
all going to plan, I am moving to complete a masters degree in Ve-
terinary Physiotherapy. I've had a passion for animals since childh-
ood, but it's nothing quite as primal as my love of horses so this de-
gree could give me a job well suited to me. I had originally plann-
ed to go into veterinary medicine but grades and unsuccessful uni-
versity applications put that on the back burner for now. Luckily I
have a close friend that has had an offer so hopefully I can just su-
pport him through it! I have two lop rabbits of my own to entertain
me, though they aren't the most affectionate of pets, they are very
adorable and floofy. Fun Fact: I have a mild potato allergy!
.sebastian meringue
Hey! Feel free to call me meringue, meri, marsh or any other
nicknames you can think of! I'm a Sherlock nerd who loves
anything sciency, and am going to be studying creative
writing whilst at University with the hopes that one day
I'll become a published author. I'm an attendant so feel
free to throw any questions you have my way and I'll do
my best to help, I'm friendly and absolutely love chatting
about anything and everything. I live in England so my time
zone may be different to yours, though thanks to the ever
wonderful insomnia I'm up at all hours of the day and night
so I'll get to any questions/queries as quickly as possible c:
snow
Hello everyone. My name is Snow. I am an 18 year old in
college and, unless plans change, hope to get a degree
with which I can tutor and work one on one with special
needs children. I have met some of my best friends
through Advanced Scribes and love seeing it bring
other people together. I love animals. I have four
cats, three dogs, and am hoping to get a new
rabbit soon. I am very friendly and am almost
always available to reach through PM here. I love
meeting new people and having long or short
conversations. If you ever have any questions, I
am happy to answer them or discuss ideas for a
roleplay. I'm always available to make new
partners. I hope everyone here enjoys AS.

forlorn.
Hey there! First things first, feel free to call me Anika, Annie, Ani,
or anything clever you come up with. I'm an eighteen-year-old girl
from Texas. I've been part of online communities for many years,
starting off with Club Penguin and ending up here. I first started
roleplaying on FooPets during 4th or 5th grade, before moving to
Chicken Smoothie, and then ultimately here. I'm currently in coll-
ege as an English major, but I'm also taking the necessary courses
so I can get into medical school. Currently, I'm intrigued by oncol-
ogy and am considering pediatric oncology. Outside of college, I
occasionally work as an optometrist's assistant, spam people with
pictures of my cats (Wiki, Rondu, Gypsy), and love helping people
in any way I can -- whether it be listening to venting or helping
with essays and homework. I love meeting people and chatting,
so feel free to shoot me a PM anytime! Bonus points if we get to
role-play together ;)

Administrators
strider
Hello. You can call me Strider or Amoux. I've been writing for about seven years now, and created Advanced Scribes in 2012. It has been an amazing four years working with the staff and members here on AS. For a bit of personal information, I'm happily in a relationship with the lovely Rakuen, I am a father, and I spend my days playing, working, training, writing, and playing D&D. Shoot me a pm if you have any questions or would just like to rp, I'm always open for new ideas. You can reach me here or kik (alphascorpiids). Kik is the fastest way to reach me. I hope each and every one of you have a fantastic time here on AS.
thunderofthedrum
Howdy all, you can call me Trace or Thunder. My main blurb is on the Team Page, so here are a few other things you may not know about me. I’m not a gamer but am close with several of varying sorts, I have a weird obsession with stationary, and I legit enjoy vacuuming. I’ve been roleplaying for a crazy long time but now mostly prefer to just work behind the scenes to provide everyone with a great haven for their passion of partnered writing. I’m pretty organized and I’m always down for chatting, from character creation to colleges to relationships to science (and everything in between). Despite working full time plus side gigs, I’m super accessible and the quickest way to get my attention is through Kik.
rakuen
Name's Rakuen but feel free to call me Jae. I'm a canine collector from New Zealand and part of a native race called the Maori. I've been writing since a young age but found a particular enthusiasm for role playing due to the collaborative work. I love to sleep, sing, draw, dance pathetically and cuss unnecessarily. I'm the hostage of your not-so-lovely admin Strider and have been for three years; he seems to think we're in love. I'm an INTJ, a chaotic neutral, allergic to sugar, flammable, a cancer and a slytherin. I am always open to discussion whether they be queries or concerns. Don't hesitate to reach out when you see me around on the forums. I hope your experience on Advanced Scribes is a good one. P.S.- I have a weenie dog named Angus whom I adore dearly and I love to introduce people to his wonderful face so please ask.

Overseersxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
eccedentesiast
Any of you that migrated here from chicken smoothie probably know
me as Smamm! I go by many names, so feel free to refer to me as S-
mamm, Eccedentesiast, Smammich, Eccy; whatever works! c: I'm a
21 year old graduate student studying to become a physician assistant,
and so I've been spending most of my time buried in textbooks as of l-
ate. I'm particularly interested in delving into plastics on the craniof-
acial reconstructive side of things. I'd love to make a difference in in-
dividuals lives with debilitating deformities, to help provide a better
life experience and improved self-esteem! Not only would I be helpin-
g on a medical basis, but also a psychological basis, and I think this
field really changes people's lives, which is why I want to be a part of
it! I'm also quite interested in obstetrics and delivery, as well as orth-
opedic trauma and spinal surgery. I'll keep you posted where I end up!
xD I've been roleplaying for going on ten years or so, and i'm still gar-
bage so it just goes to show time doesn't always make you a better w-
riter! Despite this I probably won't be stopping any time soon and ho-
pe to improve once I'm done writing research papers on the daily. I s-
tarted out on proboards before moving to chicken smoothie, and fin-
ally settled down here. I particularly enjoy writing sci-fi, fantasy, p-
ost-apocalyptic, and horror themes, though I'm trying to branch out.
I have a needy little German Shepherd fur baby named Nash that co-
nsumes as much of my time as physically possible. I'm a horror movie
addict, but I don't discriminate when it comes to the cinemas. I also
enjoy long hikes, jeeps and trucks, taking those stupid buzz feed qui-
zzes, a good book, and a tall glass of wine (or a bottle but what's the
difference). So, more about me... I'm a little on the elusive side; I p-
refer to observe and not necessarily engage, which is probably appa-
rent even in my online world. With this said, please don't hesitate to
reach out to me - I won't bite hard, I promise. I'm up for random co-
nversation or lending a helping hand, I just generally keep to myself
unless pulled into things by someone else. c: As I'm sure you can tell
based upon my job title here on AS, I'm a little bit of a coding nerd,
but I'm a lazy coding nerd. xD I enjoy coding HTML for websites and
the likes, but when it comes to post formatting forget about it - I get
lazy, so you'll tend to see that my posts don't have fancy coding or a-
nything like that. Nonetheless, I'm a big art junkie so toss stuff my
way and I'm sure to geek out. I'm looking forward to getting to know
the community on a more profound level, and can't wait to get to w-
ork on some fun new features for you all to enjoy! If you have any i-
deas, please by all means, send them to me! I'll do my best to impl-
ement whatever possible. Even if you don't have any ideas, or rather
have any questions or concerns, send me a message! I'd love to help,
and even simply get to know you all! c:
yuuri
Hello the name's Yuuri! You could also call me Mio. In the writing w-
orld I've been around since 2012 starting off on Chickensmoothie, a-
nd other smaller roleplaying sites. I joined Advanced Scribes mostly
due to me growing up and ditching Chickensmoothie. I enjoyed this
site alot! A bit more about me, I am a fan of video games and anime.
My few hobbies are roleplaying, drawing, or idling around watching
anime or playing games. I am a student who is working towards digi-
tal animation with some programming background. Roman and greek
history, figure skating, and programming/animating are really fun a-
nd makes me relieved of stress. I have a kitty and I am open to all k-
inds of roleplay requests and art requests. I hope I get to talk to you
soon!

bitanic.
Hello, everyone !! My name is bitanic or Jenna, whatever you want to
call me. I'm an 18 (almost 19 !!) year old queer woman from the lov-
ely land of Canada, studying to become an Office Administrator. I've
been roleplaying for five years, starting on chickensmoothie, and ab-
solutely love writing. If I'm not on here or in school, I'm most likely rid-
ing my horse. I lease a gorgeous Hanoverian mare named Alice and I lo-
ve her to death. Someone else I love is the actress Eliza Jane Taylor.
For more reasons that one she is my hero and inspiration and I owe her
my life. I have a tumblr and instagram to support her, so check it out
if you wish <3 Other than that I'm a chatty dork that loves to make n-
ew friends. Feel free to shoot me a pm if you have any questions abo-
ut Advanced Scribes, want to roleplay, or want to chat about horses,
Eliza Taylor, or anything at all !! I don't bite, I promise <3
nightblood .-
Heyyo, the name's Nightblood, but you can call me Mags or Noir. I'm 20─I'm a fossil, I know─and I'm a lesbian that lives in the Windy City, Chicago. Presently I am doing general studies at a community college, but I plan to either study veterinary technology or construction management technology. Writing has been a passion of mine for years now, and while I have attempted working on a few works of my own, I gave up after getting a few pages in. In 2014, I won 4th place in my category─Tales of Terror and Mystery─at the Creative Writing Festival in Wisconsin. I mostly roleplay, however, I do attempt at a short story here and there. Languages, animals, and traveling are my next passions. I hope to travel everywhere I possibly can and immerse myself in as many languages I can as well. I grew up around the Polish language, though it has grown rusty over the years, and I am knowledgeable in French. I know the basics of Italian and Spanish, but not enough to really hold up a conversation. XD I'm also a gamer, so for those of you that are fans of Assassin's Creed, the Last of Us, Destiny, or Skyrim, shoot me a PM so we can geek out over 'em. Feel free to message me about anything, though! Whether you want to roleplay, chat, or just have any questions. Do not be intimidated by the colored name─I'm really a dork. I won't bite. XD
nightfury
Hello there, everyone! You may call me night fury, or simply night for
short. I've been a member here on AS ever since August of 2013. Writ-
ing and reading are one of my most top favorite things that I love to
do. I've been writing for several years now and my love for reading b-
egan early in elementary school. Some of my favorite novels are the
series of Ranger's Apprentice and Adventurers Wanted. As of now, I o-
wn my own business in mechanics and I'm interested in studying into
different languages and cultures. I spend most of my weekdays impr-
oving my business and working, but I also love the outdoors. Be if I'm
camping, swimming, or horseback riding. I'm also quite the dragon f-
anatic, so if you ever need information about dragons I'm your guy. O
n that note, I'm quite friendly and I enjoy interacting with people and
being of assistance. So don't be afraid at all to approach me if you ev-
er have questions or even if you just want to chat!

New Buttons: For a long while, AS members have been asking about adding a 'justify' button, which was finally implemented, along with a few additional buttons! Along with being able to justify posts, members can now post in any type of font they'd like -- as long as the font is common. Along with these two features is the spoiler button. It's currently a little buggy as some of you may have noticed, but the button is being tampered with and will soon be working properly! Here's a list of fonts that will work with the new font button:

Arial Black, Century Gothic, Comic Sans MS, Courier, Impact, Gabriola, Georgia, Lucida Console, MS Sans Seif4, Palatine Linotype, System, Tahoma, Verdana, Wingdings

RP Competition: The role-play competition has been going on since early March, making it two months already! The competition will be ending May 31st at 12 AM EST. That leaves only one month until the exciting conclusion, so make sure to encourage your favorite team. The prize for the winning team has not yet been revealed; stay tuned.

Summer Contest: At the conclusion of the current competition, a new contest will begin to celebrate 100 Days of Summer. It will be in a different style, with participation welcome of everyone, for as many or few days as you wish. Stay tuned for the full description in the June issue of the Afflatus.

Rules: As AS continues to grow, we have revamped our Rules page to better explain everything and include some additional material. Please check it out to make sure you are up to date!

Mascot: As previously voted, the new Advanced Scribes mascot is a majestic stag! Art has been commissioned and completed, and many of you may have already noticed the newly implemented banner of him. At this time, he is only visible if you are viewing the we_clearblue_fixed_width Board Style, but we are working on getting it onto the other Styles as well.

When trying to write, try to answer the 5 W's:

Who? Who are you talking about? Who is around? Who is your character thinking about?
What? What is happening? What is your character thinking? What could happen next?
When? What time is it in the roleplay? Is it sunny out or rainy? Is it nighttime?
Where? Where is your character right now? Where is he headed? Where is he looking, what can he see? Describe your setting.
Why? Why is your character feeling the way they feel?

Try to answer these questions by describing feelings, surroundings, and the human senses. This can help lengthen writing and provide depth to it.

When developing characters, some questions you could answer:

1. What would completely break them?
2. What was the best thing in their life? Worst thing?
3. What seemingly insignificant memories stuck with them?
4. Does the character work to support their hobbies? Use their hobbies to fill up the time they aren't working?
5. What is your character reluctant to tell people?
6. How do they feel about sex?
7. How many friends to they have?
8. How many friends do they want?
9. In public, what would your character make a scene about?
10. What would your character give their life for?
11. What are their major flaws?
12. What do they try to care about? What do they pretend to care about?
13. What are they afraid of?
14. How is the image they try to project different from the image they actually project?

When writing a novel, or any story, don't ask: "What is my story about? Who is it about? What will happen?"
Instead, ask: Who is the character? What does the character want more than anything? How can I prevent them from getting it?"

Similar to newspapers, this will serve as an advice column. Members who send in things they want advice on may be kept anonymous, if they choose. Once the next issue is posted, a response will be given out by (namehere). Please note, however, that the issues will be posted once a month. We will send responses back to PMs individually, but will post the question and answer in the coming issue. We hope this helps others who may be going through similar situations and can relate.

We have a poll! Please click this link and provide us your feedback! Thank you!

Edit: The stag option won! When writing your letters, please submit through here! Address it as 'Dear Stag' :) Keep submissions to about 200 words.
Thank you!

"I'd take a bullet for you, you know that."
"You're an immortal, and I'm going to kill you if you don't quit saying that." x

You stumble across an article online detailing a brutal murder. There are pictures of the victim. It's you. x

If you write a response to the prompt, post a link to the submission in your writing thread or post it directly onto this thread!

AS Afflatus: Introducing...

The staff of Advanced Scribes will be working together to create a Create Your Own Adventure Story. Here, a story will progress and members will have the ability to choose what happens next through a series of scenarios with numerous choices in them. Members can message what they vote for and in the next issue, the story will progress, based on those votes.

Each poll will remain posted from the 1st to the 20th of the month.

You look in the mirror and see a (girl/boy) staring back.

Featured Writing is meant to showcase the works of members that have personal work posted up in the Share Your Writing forum, to draw attention to their work. If chosen to be featured in the magazine, the writer will be messaged for a blurb to summarize their story and asked to provide a snippet of no more than 300 words that they think will draw readers in and intrigue them to continue reading their work. A link to the full material will be provided at the end of the snippet. Members are welcome to send in nominations of stories they think should be featured. Anything from the Share Your Writing forum is fair game.

Members can send in Anonymous Compliments about other members. While there is the Warm Fuzzies thread, this segment is meant for small paragraphs or less to brighten someone's day. Compliments will be kept anonymous and the receiving end will receive a message to alert them to the fact that they have a message posted in the magazine from them. This is to promote positivity throughout the site and we hope our members enjoy this segment. Keep compliments to 75 words maximum.

Members who seek critique for their work can submit their work to us. Then, other members have the option of reading and providing comment and feedback. Members may do so by posting directly in this thread or by messaging an anonymous critique to be posted for them by forlorn. We will soon include a link to our first writing piece. In the June issue of the Afflatus we will quote the writing piece here, as well as some of the received anonymous critique, and link to the next writing piece.
