If you are a new reader of the Afflatus, welcome! For learning about the purpose of each section, feel free to read the descriptions in our very first issue, found here. To get to know the AS staff better, that same issue included some introductions by the staff while our Team Page is under construction.

Houses: Houses have been released! Get sorted by taking the test here. Submit art, upcoming art contest.

100 Days of Summer: We are now approaching the halfway point with the summer writing event! Hope everyone has been enjoying the prompts; the staff have certainly enjoyed reading the different interpretations from horror to fluff and everywhere in between. Remember, this event is what YOU make of it. Feel overwhelmed by the idea of writing every day? Feel free to pick and choose! Your Housemates will be glad that you participated and earned a few points. Feeling ambitious and in need of a challenge? Go for all 100, as BONUS House points will be awarded to those who achieve that incredible goal.

Archives: With any forum, threads come and go. It's the same with writing stories and roleplays - people get jobs, lose interest, change tastes, or perhaps the story being written is simply at its conclusion. For whatever the reason, we are opening our new Archives section, to where long-inactive threads from certain areas will be moved. At this time, the only threads to be moved to Archives will be old roleplays and roleplay discussions, which is why the Archives board itself can be found under the Roleplay category of the website.

Great Hall: Also revealed in this issue of the Afflatus is the Great Hall! Hope everyone has been sorted and have been meeting Housemates in the Common Room threads so far. To provide a space for members of all Houses to interact, The Giant Chat Room will now be replaced with the Great Hall, an inclusive area for everyone to mix and mingle.

Updates on the PHP Upgrade: As you all have noticed by now, we underwent a massive upgrade to the most current version of coding. Many users were unaware but errors were cropping up with increasing frequency due to our previous coding being a very outdated version. We had postponed upgrading as we knew it would be a big adjustment, but now that the time has arrived we hope everyone is excited for a shiny new version of AS! While the base coding is now up to date, it will take a bit of time to get all of the user-end features ironed out and the appearance finalized. Please bear with us as we work hard on these changes! With the new version comes new challenges of how to achieve the features you guys have come to expect. We do still have our Site Change/Addition Requests thread, but before posting there PLEASE make sure you are up to date on all announcements and have looked at recent posts within that thread, as people posting duplicate issues risk their posts being deleted out of redundancy.

Spam: As a reminder, spam is not tolerated on AS. This has always been in the rules but more recently it has also been reiterated in the announcements. Spam includes unnecessary posts and bumping of threads publicly as well as sending private messages that are unwelcome, unsolicited, or that extend beyond what is appropriate. If someone declines, do not ask them again as continued contact could venture into harassment. If you do privately contact someone to start a roleplay, make sure you personalize it rather than let it be mistaken for something mass-sent to many recipients (which, again, is spam). Anything like this is to be reported. Even if you aren't sure, there is nothing wrong in saying so in a note when you report! Staff will simply take a look and see which side of the line it falls on. If you are found spamming, you risk warnings and even being banned.

The poll from last issue had 51 votes for a girl and 32 for a boy, making the girl option our winner!

So far, you have looked in the mirror to see a girl staring back at you. The reflection is familiar to you, but today it seems like you are seeing her for the first time. Her hair is _______ and her eyes are _______ in color.

Choices are as follows. Please include 1 vote for hair and 1 vote for eyes.
Hair: curly brown, straight ginger, wavy blonde, wavy black, straight white
Eyes: ice blue, deep green, big brown, cool grey, flecked hazel

Like before, look at the poll above for the options for this issue and cast your votes!

Re: AS AFFLATUS - 2 - Dear Stag

Dear Museless Maureen,
Music is a popular method for getting inspired - particularly
music that corresponds with the genre you are writing. Another
thing you could do it to group your roleplays on genre. Action,
romance, adventure etc. Try to start with a roleplay that you
do have muse for in that category and work your way
down the list. You might feel better able to stay in the
flow of a genre once you have started. Also,
if you don't have muse, don't hesitate to reach out to your
partner and try to come up with some plot ideas for later
on in the roleplay, as that might boost your current muse.
-The Stag
Dear Stag,
Sometimes I just don't seem to have any muse for my
roleplays but I hate being that partner that loses interest
and leaves. I know it looks bad and I always worry people
will start to dislike me if I leave. Do you have any advice on
how to get some muse for my current roleplays instead of
abandoning?
-Museless Maureen

To submit a letter to the stag for advice or anything else, please use this form. Please keep letters to a maximum of 200 words. You may also use this form for anything else you wish to remain anonymous for, such as feedback, submissions or recommendations, prompt ideas, compliments, etc.
Keep in mind, the Afflatus is posted every two months.

Re: AS AFFLATUS - 2 - Writing Tips

This issue's theme is Writing Space. Next week's theme will focus on muse. If you have any tips regarding muse, please PM them to forlorn.

Create a writing space and protect it. Set aside some time from the world, from distractions. Have something that works for you - such as your computer, or even just a notebook you can stash in your bag. Disconnect from the internet. Put on some music or the sound of rain if that may get you in the mood. Sit at a space you keep for writing, whether a desk, a cushion, in a window, and write. Fine tuning and fact checking can come later. For now, just write - whatever comes into your mind, let it flow from your fingers. Write every day, even if it’s only for five minutes. Read back to yourself what you have written, and do it aloud.

With all of the great writing being posted and at such incredible frequency in the 100 Days of Summer event area, we wanted to do something a little special and feature one poem from each House to celebrate their creation and the wonderful team spirit we have been seeing. Hey there! I just wanted to let you know that you are amazing! Not only is your writing superb and your creativity limitless, but you are a wonderful person. You are talented, and also unique. You have the potential to become anything you want if you put your mind to it. Don't let limitations or obstacles hold you back to achieving your dreams. You're awesome! Keep being 'you'.
For this issue, our own staff member astorea has submitted some writing to be critiqued. You can post what you liked, didn't like, and constructive criticism in this thread. Included are the first few lines, so please go read the full piece!
astorëa wrote:She was not built for love. She, born into pain and dread, hadn’t the foundation to support the temples a heart required. Every person - a brick seeking cement - begged for purchase in her crumbling city. Ravenya hadn’t a clue why so many people built on ground they could clearly feel shift beneath their feet. Atlantis, constructed on shores of shifting sands, met its fate as was only sensible. No, she was never meant to hold up such a heavy sky with such narrow shoulders.

But we all must hold up clouds that never expected to cry so much rain.

It is titled: No love you have come too late
