If you are a new reader of the Afflatus, welcome! For learning about the purpose of each section, feel free to read the descriptions in our very first issue, found here. To get to know the AS staff better, that same issue included some introductions by the staff while our Team Page is under construction. You can submit things to the Afflatus using this form or post directly to the thread.

AS Afflatus - Issue 4 - Updates

Deadline for Apps: The deadline for submitting your staff applications is October 30th by 11:59 PM CST. That’s right guys, the day before Halloween! We’ll be evaluating them as soon as possible to give our great staff a boost in helping hands and are excited to see what happens next. Make sure you get your application in before the end of the day (US time zones) for the administrators to consider it. The announcement with more information can be found HERE, and please don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions you may have.

Book Club: For a short while in the past, there was a member-led book club here at AS and Thunder is very interested in bringing this back to life! HERE you will find the new thread with a description, rules, and the first book. Suggestions for future titles are welcome, as well as discussion questions and any other input you may have. Titles will often be decided by popular vote within the thread.

Explicit Board: As you all should know by now, we have created a more private area for roleplays whose themes venture into particularly explicit and even taboo topics. To be given access to this area, please make sure your date of birth is in your profile to make things quicker for staff and please leave it there; it will only be visible to staff. Any who already have access - we would like to ask the same of you as well.

Adventure Story: The Adventure Story has been put on hold for the time being. Please forgive us for past issues which have come up and for the inconsistency in updates. There have been time constraints and conflicts of schedules, resulting in this getting pushed to the backburner. We will work to keep everyone abreast with the status of Adventure Story and have it back up and running as soon as possible.

Anonymous Wyvern wrote:Dear Stag,

Sometimes, my coding can be atrocious. Do you know of a few resources that can help improve my coding so I can practice and eventually create some awesome layouts?

Dear Anonymous Wyvern,

One of the best resources to improve coding is to look at other people's forms! Quote them and take a look at how they've coded certain aspects of their form and try to incorporate it into yours. Another option is to look under the forum, Coding Shops. Here you can find a few people that may be willing to offer tips. An excellent thread to go to would be The Coding Corner which was recently posted up on the forum in early September. The thread has many resources linked and the two running it would gladly provide tips and assistance!

AS Afflatus - Issue 4 - Writing Tips

This month's theme is The Muse and The Critic. We all contain The Muse and The Critic in varying degrees. In order to do anything creatively to the best of our ability, we should draw on both influences. The trick is not to prefer one over the other. Not only will this help you live a better life - being responsible when needed, but also seeking out fun, adventures, and spontaneity - it will also help you write better novels.

1. Writing muse lies on the right side of your brain, where all creative work takes place. The critic lies on the left side, where all logical thinking occurs.

2. The muse has access to the unconscious mind, where you dream, imagine things, and store things away. The critic doesn't have time for such nonsense.

3. The muse wants to wear whatever they want or be naked if they feel like it. The critic wants to avoid standing out and is conservative in taste, often winning.

4. The muse is laid-back by nature and wants to write when the mood strikes, which is not very often. The critic forces the muse to get to work.

5. The muse often sulks and maybe throws a tantrum while the critic shakes their head and cleans up afterwards.

6. The muse is the life of the party. They will drink as much as they want while the critic will remind them that they need to be up early.

7. The muse enjoys writing down beautiful thoughts in the form of a story while the critic checks for poor structure and weak characterization.

8. The muse prefers going to bed late and waking in the afternoon. The critic knows nothing will get done with such a routine.

Remember, too much time spent with the muse as company will lead to novel with flashes of brilliance. However, that novel will be too rough and shapeless to satisfy readers overall. But too much time spent with the critic as company will lead to a well-constructed, but lifeless novel. The muse and critic must work together and the best way to ensure this is understanding what each is good at and utilizing them at that time.

AS Afflatus - Issue 4 - Life Tips

Alright guys! It's October, meaning that FAFSA has just opened up for those in the US. For those of you about to go graduate from high school and go into college for the first time there are some important tips to keep in mind! If you have any questions at all, please PM me! I actually work in the Financial Aid office at my college so I'd be happy to answer any questions I can! If I don't happen to know the answer, I can also ask the counselors there.

1. Fill out the FAFSA Application as soon as you can. The quicker you get the application done, the more aid you can possibly get.

2. When filling out the FAFSA Application this year for the 2018-2019 school year, make sure you use the tax information from 2016.

3. Keep in mind that you are not considered independent until you are 24 years old. Even though you are probably 18-19, you are still dependents of your parents. You will have to put your parents' information on the application, as well as their tax information.

4. Once you have submitted the application, it takes a couple of days for the application to be processed and sent to the school.Once you get that email, start checking through your (potential) schools' web portals to check on any additional documentation they may be requesting. Try calling and emailing the Financial Aid counselors as well if you have questions or don't understand something.

5. The email you receive from the FAFSA website telling you that your application has been processed does not mean your school has processed and awarded you your financial aid. The email will tell you what you may be eligible for, but that is not finalized until the financial aid counselors at the school review your application and make any needed corrections to the information, which can change the estimated eligible aid.

6. Each school has a different financial aid process. One school may ask for no documents to be turned in while another requires documents to be turned in for verification. Please check each school.

in time, the sun's gonna shine by buck

When Nikolai had been younger - much, much younger - his mother had described to him the sea. She said that it had been crafted by the Gods so that the mortals bound to land could know what it was like to touch the sky, that it was vast, unending, as dark as the heavens when you got deep enough, and that it smelled of salt, of fresh beginnings so many longed for. Though he didn't understand, not completely, he would lie awake at night, anyway, and imagine the way the water would lick at his skin, salty waves lulling him to sleep.

Now, however, there was not a damned thing on Earth whose stench he wouldn't prefer.

Every crevice of the ship reeked of salt. He couldn't escape the ocean of which he had once longed to soak forever in; his dreams echoed with the creaking of wet wood and the push-pull of waves lapping at the bow and keel, and the distant memory of his mother's words quickly became something to be crushed beneath his boot.

silent beats, freedom flees by Wolfs_Howling_Shadow

Sky reaches down
Freedom touches ground
Shadows gather around

A howl splits the night
Snow turns to pink
As claws glint in the light
Of the full moon

Owl wings
Silent beats
Another howl
A wolf is seen
Fleeing far

Blood drips
Scars form
She returns

Death fills the night
She howls her loss
Then follows the silent beats

High up
Dragons meet
Fire flashes
Ice falls

Two remain
Flame and Fang
Silent beats
Take off again

High up
Far away
Dragon and owl-wolf
Hide where freedom lives

Sky reaches down
Freedom touches ground
And shadows gather 'round
